Lilly Singh

What strikes me about Lilly Singh is how completely she embodies a new path to fame. A daughter of Indian immigrants in Scarborough, she started posting YouTube videos as Superwoman in 2010 and turned that homemade comedy into a late-night hosting career and an array of play buttons. I respect that she carried a second-generation immigrant perspective into the mainstream without sanding it down. The play-button trophies matter less to me than her nerve in being unmistakably herself on a stage that rarely makes room for it. She feels like someone who refuses to fit a mold, and that is exactly why she lasts.
