My Take
What grabs me about Linda Lingle is not just that she governed Hawaii, but that she did it as a Republican in one of the most reliably Democratic states in the union, the first since 1959. Add that she was Hawaii's first female and first Jewish governor, and you get a politician who made a career out of beating the odds. I admire people who win where the map says they shouldn't. Her move from publishing into mayoral and then statewide office suggests someone who understood how to talk to people directly. The achievement speaks loudly enough on its own.
