My Take

I will be honest that Lindsay Davis is not a name I can recite a full medal history for, but that itself is part of what interests me. American figure skating is brutally deep, and simply surviving and being remembered in that field says something. Skating hides its labour well; the few seconds of beauty on the ice rest on years of falls and bruises no audience ever sees. I find myself respecting athletes whose effort never quite shows up in the headline numbers. A skater out of sunny Upland, California chasing artistry on cold steel blades is a quietly poetic image I keep returning to.
