Lisa Nowak

Lisa Nowak earns my respect simply for the staggering climb of her career: naval flight officer, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, and a NASA mission specialist trained in robotics. The discipline required to reach orbit is almost beyond imagining. I am aware her name later became attached to a very public scandal, but I refuse to reduce a whole life to its lowest chapter. What I see first is a person who endured the most punishing training on Earth to leave it behind. Glory and shadow both, she remains, for me, an unforgettable and deeply human figure.
