My Take
The first thing anyone notices about Manabu Nakanishi is the sheer physical scale. He came into professional wrestling from an amateur wrestling background, stood 186 centimetres, and hit like someone who had never needed to learn a shortcut. Born in Kyoto in 1967 and a graduate of Senshu University, he became one of the long-standing pillars of New Japan Pro-Wrestling: a one-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, a G1 Climax winner, and a three-time IWGP Tag Team Champion. He also fought in mixed martial arts. What I appreciate about him, though, is not the title list. It is that he never really diversified. As the style around him grew faster and more technical, Nakanishi kept doing the same thing: overwhelming people with strength and stubbornness, an unfashionable approach delivered without apology. That kind of career takes a specific sort of conviction, because it means accepting that some nights you will simply be out of step with the era. He is retired now, and the roster has plenty of clever wrestlers. It has nobody who feels that heavy.
