My Take
Marc Almond is a great survivor of British pop, and I have a soft spot for his refusal to play it safe. Born in Southport, he fronted the synth-pop duo Soft Cell, whose Tainted Love became one of the defining tracks of the early-1980s new wave, and he's since carried a long solo career steeped in a decadent, theatrical sensibility. He's an OBE now, but what strikes me is the consistency of his vision, that distinctly androgynous, sensual world he's never abandoned. Plenty of artists who score one giant hit fade; he kept singing and performing for decades. That stubborn devotion to his own aesthetic is exactly what I find admirable.

He is known for his distinctive soulful voice and androgynous image, and has had a diverse career as a solo artist. Almond rose to prominence in the early 1980s with Soft Cell's hit "Tainted Love" (1981), which became a defining track of the new wave and synth-pop movement.
