My Take
Mark Chao represents the best of his Taiwanese-Canadian background to me. Raised partly in Canada and educated at the University of Victoria, he returned home and won the Golden Bell Award for Best Actor with his very first series, Black & White, in 2009. Winning top honors on debut is almost unheard of, and it signaled real instinct rather than luck. Actor, singer and model, he pairs leading-man looks with surprisingly weighty performances, and I love that contrast. He has stayed at the front rank of Chinese-language cinema and television ever since, and I admire that kind of substance over flash.
