My Take
Mark Waid is, to me, one of the last great true believers in superheroes. In an industry that often defaults to cynicism and grimdark reinvention, he writes characters like Superman and the Flash as if their decency genuinely matters, and Kingdom Come remains a high-water mark for that conviction. Coming out of small-town Hueytown, Alabama, he turned a fan's love into a craft, racking up Eisner and Harvey awards along the way. I admire the awards less than the sincerity beneath them. Waid reminds you that earnestness, written well, hits harder than irony ever could.
