My Take

I grew up on that exact art style without even knowing her name, and once you learn it's Yumiko Igarashi everything clicks. Those enormous sparkling eyes with stars scattered inside, the bouncy blonde curls, the tears welling up at the worst possible moment, she basically wrote the visual grammar of shojo manga, and Candy Candy is the gold-standard example. There's something quietly moving about the fact she came out of Asahikawa up in snowy Hokkaido and dreamed all that sweetness onto the page. I love that her heroines are forever brave little criers while you sense a real toughness behind the pen. She never struck me as the loud, spotlight-chasing type, just a craftsperson who put in the years and stamped that dreamy look onto millions of childhoods. Quietly enormous, in my book.
