Masaru Uno

Sixteen seasons with the Chunichi Dragons, from 1977 to 1992, then two more with the Chiba Lotte Marines to close things out in 1993 and 1994. Written flat like that it reads as a line in a record book, but consider what staying in one uniform for sixteen years actually costs: surviving slumps, injuries, and every change of manager, while younger infielders keep arriving to take your position. At 180 cm he was a big man for a Japanese infielder of that era, and the fact that he held the job that long says something about durability that no single-season statistic captures. I also like the shape of the ending. He was born in Chiba Prefecture, and he finished his playing days with the Chiba Lotte Marines, going home to hang it up. Careers rarely arrange themselves that neatly. His did.
