Masazumi Gotoda

Masazumi Gotoda has one of the odder career shapes in Japanese politics. Born in Tokyo in 1969 and educated at Keio, he built his base on Tokushima soil while carrying the name of his great-uncle Masaharu Gotoda, once among the most formidable figures in postwar government. He spent over two decades in the House of Representatives as a Liberal Democrat who kept saying the inconvenient thing out loud, which is a slow way to climb. Then he left national politics to become governor of Tokushima, trading proximity to power for direct accountability to the people of one prefecture. At home he is often introduced as the husband of actress Maki Mizuno. That framing undersells him.
