Mason Thames genuinely caught me off guard with The Black Phone — here's a kid from Dallas, barely a teenager when he filmed it, and he's holding his own against Ethan Hawke in a genuinely terrifying horror film. His portrayal of Finney Blake hits that rare sweet spot: vulnerable enough that you're scared for him, but with a quiet steel underneath that makes you root like crazy. What's wild is that he was born in 2007, meaning he's younger than some of the pop songs on my playlist, yet he delivers a performance that feels earned and lived-in.
