My Take
Mason Williams is one of those rare polymaths who refuses to be boxed in, and I love him for it. Born in Abilene, Texas in 1938, he is a classical guitarist whose 1968 instrumental Classical Gas still glitters, yet he also won an Emmy for comedy writing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Pulling off both feats is almost unheard of. To me he represents the ideal of the genuinely creative mind, equally fluent in melody and wit. I deeply admire artists who treat genre boundaries as suggestions rather than rules, and Williams clearly never asked permission.
