Matthew Settle

Matthew Settle earns my respect for his range more than his fame. Captain Speirs in Band of Brothers was all coiled, quiet menace, and then he turned around and played Rufus Humphrey on Gossip Girl as a warm, grounded dad, two registers that barely overlap. That elasticity is the mark of a real craftsman. Born in 1969 in Hickory, North Carolina, he never seemed to chase headlines; instead he built trust role by role. I have a soft spot for actors who do unshowy, fully committed work, and he's squarely in that camp. I'm always curious what character he'll quietly inhabit next.
