Mayte Garcia

Mayte Garcia is, to me, a genuinely gifted artist who deserves to be seen on her own terms. Born in an army town in Alabama and partly schooled in Germany, she grew up worldly, and her command of dance, singing, and choreography speaks to a rare versatility. Yes, she was married to Prince for four years, and that proximity to genius fascinates me, but I refuse to let it define her. To stand beside an artist like that demanded real talent and instinct of her own. Garcia is a performer whose creativity and resilience earn my respect entirely independent of whose name she once shared.
