Mei Kurokawa

Child actors who are still working in their late thirties are the exception, not the rule, and Mei Kurokawa is one of them. Born in Nishitokyo, Tokyo in 1987, she started young, went through Horikoshi High School — the school Japanese entertainment sends its working teenagers to — and simply kept going, across modelling, television drama and film. She never had the kind of explosive stardom that burns out a career in three years, which I suspect is exactly why the career is still here. Her run in the Kaidan Shin Mimibukuro haunted-house films is the part I find most telling: horror is unglamorous work that demands an actor sell fear without dialogue, and it tends to be handed to performers directors actually trust rather than to whoever is trending. There is also a small charming fact — her given name comes from May, the English name of her birth month. A career built on steadiness rather than spectacle, and better for it.
