Meiko Nakamura

Meiko Nakamura started as a child actor and never really stopped working. Born in Tokyo in 1934, she moved across singing, acting and voice work at a time when Japanese entertainment itself was still being invented, and she stayed visible through decade after decade of it. What strikes me most is not the range but the survival. Child stars are the most disposable people in any industry; almost none of them get a second act, let alone a sixth. She kept finding rooms to be useful in, and by all accounts did it without the heaviness that long careers often acquire. She died on December 31, 2023. There is something almost theatrical about leaving on the last day of the year, and I doubt she would have minded the observation.
