My Take
Mel Smith fascinates me because he was an Oxford-educated mind who chose comedy. He made his name on satirical sketch shows like Not the Nine O'Clock News, and with partner Griff Rhys Jones built Talkback into one of Britain's biggest comedy producers. He acted, directed, and ran the business side, a complete entertainment animal. Losing him in 2013 at 60 felt premature. To me he embodies a particular British truth: when a genuinely clever person commits fully to making people laugh, the result is something rare and refined. A sharp, generous talent.
