Melanie Thornton

Melanie Thornton's story moves me every time. A Charleston-born singer who relocated to Germany and became the voice of 1990s Eurodance through La Bouche, she had a soaring, instantly recognizable instrument that defined an era of European pop. The tragedy of losing her in a 2001 plane crash at just 34 is hard to absorb; she had only begun her solo journey. Yet her Christmas anthem still plays across Germany each year, which means her voice never really left. I think of her as one of pop's great what-ifs, a talent taken far too soon but never forgotten.
