Melissa Sue Anderson

Melissa Sue Anderson is one of those actresses who defined what it meant to grow up on American television in the 1970s and '80s. I mean, she played Mary Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie for nearly a decade — that's not a role, that's basically a childhood institution for an entire generation. What impresses me most is how she handled Mary's storyline going blind: she didn't play it for easy sympathy, she brought genuine emotional weight to it, and that Emmy nomination she earned was absolutely deserved. Berkeley-born and clearly sharp, she eventually moved into producing too, which tells you she was never content just hitting her marks. She's kept a low public profile over the years, but honestly that restraint feels right — her work speaks loudly enough on its own.
