My Take

Melody Gardot's voice does its work by holding back. That smoky contralto, the way she underplays a line until it lands deep in your chest, is exactly the restraint I love in a singer. She folds blues, bossa nova, folk, and pop into jazz and comes out sounding like no one but herself, which is why calling her one of the finest jazz vocalists of her generation feels earned to me. Late at night her records have a way of forgiving a hard day. That's what consoling people through music actually looks like, and I wish more listeners in Japan knew her name.
