Michael Ironside

Michael Ironside is the kind of character actor I treasure: a face that does half the storytelling before he says a word. Over 270 credits, mostly villains, yet what makes him frightening is the human ache underneath the menace rather than the menace itself. His art-school roots in Toronto and his work as a writer and director tell me he builds his antagonists from the inside out, which is why they land. I'll always respect the journeyman craftsman over the flashy lead, and his long, steady career is proof that a great scene-sharpener is worth more than a dozen forgettable stars.
