Michael Lucas

What fascinates me about Michael Lucas is the trajectory: a Moscow law student who reinvented himself as a Manhattan media entrepreneur and built the city's largest gay adult film company from scratch. I tend to value people who refuse to stay in the lane assigned to them, and Lucas clearly did that, wearing the hats of director, writer, producer and performer at once. His public stances have always courted controversy, and I won't pretend they're uncomplicated. But the sheer conviction with which he pursues his own vision earns a grudging respect from me. Love him or not, he is undeniably a self-made force.
