My Take
Michael Sembello is too often filed away as the 'Maniac' guy, and I think that sells him short. Yes, that 1983 Flashdance smash earned an Oscar nomination and topped the charts, but the more interesting story is the craftsman underneath, a Philadelphia musician who sings, plays guitar and piano, and writes and produces with equal ease. Artists this versatile usually end up as the quiet backbone of the industry, valued by collaborators even when the spotlight moves on. I respect that kind of durable, unflashy talent, and I suspect his catalog rewards listeners willing to look past the one famous hit.
