My Take
Michael Swanwick strikes me as a writer's writer, the rare science fiction author who is equally formidable at novel and short-story length. Winning a Nebula for Best Novel is impressive, but his run of Hugo wins for short fiction across 1999, 2000, and 2002 is what truly earns my respect, because nailing a complete world in a few pages takes a precision most authors never master. Stations of the Tide and Dogfight show an idea density I genuinely admire. That he kept publishing from the early 1980s into the present, still active online, speaks to a creative stamina I find rare and quietly heroic.
