Michelle Gomez

Michelle Gomez is one of those performers whose range genuinely surprises me. She proved her comic gifts in Green Wing, then completely reinvented herself as Missy in Doctor Who, a role of unhinged menace and odd elegance that earned her a BAFTA TV nomination. That ability to pivot from broad comedy to gleeful villainy is rare, and I suspect it owes a lot to her Glaswegian wit and toughness. She is the kind of actor who only gets more formidable with age, and I am always glad to see her name in a cast list.
