My Take
I'll be honest, politicians don't usually grab me the way movie stars do, but there's something quietly reassuring about a guy like Junichi Ishii who clearly built his footing the slow way, rooted in his home turf of Chiba. He served five terms in the Chiba Prefectural Assembly before moving to the House of Councillors in 2007, and he has since run the upper house's machinery as chair of its Rules and Administration Committee and as the LDP's secretary-general there. He is also affiliated with the revisionist lobby Nippon Kaigi. That is backroom, procedural power rather than the TV kind.
