Micky Dolenz

Micky Dolenz is one of those guys who gets underestimated because The Monkees were dismissed as a manufactured TV band — but honestly, his voice is the secret weapon that made the whole thing work. Born in Los Angeles in 1945 into a showbiz family (his dad was actor George Dolenz), Micky had natural stage instincts long before the Monkees audition landed him the drummer-vocalist slot in 1966. And what a slot — he ended up as one of the band's two main voices on hits like I'm a Believer, with a warmth and ease that held up for decades of reunions. Even after Peter Tork and Davy Jones passed, he kept the legacy alive with Mike Nesmith right up to 2021. For a "fake" band, that's a real career.
