My Take
Mike Judge might be the sharpest satirist American television has produced, and he did it while pretending to be the dumbest. Beavis and Butt-Head looked like idiocy but was really a mirror held up to its audience; Silicon Valley skewered tech culture so precisely that industry insiders winced in recognition. A Guayaquil-born, UC San Diego-educated outsider to Hollywood, he writes with an engineer's eye for how systems fail and how people delude themselves. The Emmy and the Winsor McCay Award only confirm what fans always knew: beneath the crude drawings sits one of the great American social critics. I revisit his work constantly.
