My Take

Robert Arboleda is the kind of footballer I find easy to root for. A centre-back out of Esmeraldas on Ecuador's coast, anchoring the defence at a club as demanding as São Paulo, he makes his living doing the unglamorous work: reading runs, winning the duel, snuffing out the other team's best forward before the highlight reel can start. Defenders rarely get the love strikers do, but a back line is only as calm as its central pillar. There is real character in choosing the position nobody films, and doing it abroad under pressure year after year.
