Mike Nichols

Mike Nichols is, to me, the gold standard of the director as actor's collaborator. An EGOT winner who moved fluidly between Broadway and Hollywood, he had a near-supernatural ability to coax the best performance out of anyone, novice or veteran. I admire that his comic instincts, honed in improv, never left his dramatic work, giving even his serious films a human lightness. The Graduate alone would secure his place, yet his five Tony wins prove the stage was equally his home.
