My Take
There is something almost mythic about Mike Singletary, and the nickname Samurai Mike earns it. Two Defensive Player of the Year awards, a Hall of Fame bust, and that legendary stare from the heart of the Chicago Bears defense make him one of the great middle linebackers ever. What moves me most, though, is the 1990 Walter Payton Man of the Year award, because it honors character as much as ferocity. Rising from Houston through Baylor, he embodied intensity wedded to dignity. I rank him among the players who made defense feel like an art form rather than mere obstruction.
