Mikiko Ando

Honestly, weightlifting is one of those sports where I feel like I know almost nothing about who's actually competing at a serious level, and Mikiko Ando is a good reminder of that blind spot. She grew up in Shiroi City out in Chiba — not exactly a spotlight-heavy place — and went on to pursue weightlifting through Heisei International University. At 155 cm, she's lifting barbells that most people couldn't budge off the floor, and that gap between physical stature and raw output is kind of the whole point of this sport. There's no flash to weightlifting, no crowd pleasing choreography — just you, the bar, and whether you can hold it together when it counts. She turned that grind into a bronze medal in the 59 kg class at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and the fact that someone quietly grinds through a sport this demanding, from a suburb most people drive past without noticing, makes me straighten up a little. That kind of discipline speaks for itself.
