My Take

Maïga impresses me less for any single goal than for sheer staying power. Born in Bamako, he carried Mali's number nine through four Africa Cup of Nations campaigns and helped them to third place twice, in 2012 and 2013. Strikers live and die on confidence, and shouldering a nation's expectations tournament after tournament demands real mental toughness. Plenty of forwards flare up and fade; he kept turning up on the continent's biggest stage. I respect that consistency enormously, and I think the bare fact of repeatedly representing Mali at that level tells you most of what you need to know about the man.

Overview

Modibo Maïga (born 3 September 1987) is a Malian professional footballer who plays as a striker. A full international for Mali since 2007, he was part of their squads at the four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, helping them to third place in the 2012 and 2013 editions.
