My Take

Nandita Das is, to me, one of the most quietly courageous figures in Indian cinema. Acting across more than forty films in ten languages is impressive enough, but what earns my deep respect is her refusal to play it safe, taking on films like Fire that confronted real taboos head-on. Then she did the harder thing: she moved behind the camera to tell stories in her own voice. The Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres feels well deserved. She rejected the decorative-actress box entirely and chose to be an artist who argues with the world, and I admire that enormously.
