My Take
Being the son of Ryoko Moriyama is not the head start it looks like from outside. Your mother is a beloved folk singer, you pick the same trade, and every listener arrives with a verdict already prepared. Then Sakura, from his 2002 album, became one of those songs the entire country knows, and a second label got stapled on: the Sakura guy. Two boxes before you have properly begun. What I like about Naotaro Moriyama is that he refused to settle into the gentle-ballad career handed to him. The songs can be tender, and Itoshi Kimi e is as straight down the middle as it gets, but his live shows and his between-song talk come at you from a strange, faintly absurd angle. On paper he is unremarkable: born in Tokyo in 1976, Seijo University, 172 cm. Then he opens his mouth.
