My Take

Natascha Kampusch is not a celebrity in any ordinary sense, and I hesitate even to frame her that way. Abducted at ten and held for over eight years before escaping on her own, she did something extraordinary afterward: she refused to be only a victim. By writing her autobiography and working as an author and presenter, she seized authorship of her own story rather than letting others narrate it. That insistence on agency, on being the teller and not merely the told, earns a respect different from any I feel for entertainers. I simply hope her life in Vienna now holds real peace.

Overview

Natascha Maria Kampusch (born 17 February 1988) is an Austrian author and former talk show host. At the age of 10, on 2 March 1998, she was abducted and held in a secret cellar by her kidnapper, Wolfgang Přiklopil, for more than eight years, until she escaped on 23 August 2006. Upon her escape, Přiklopil died by suicide by train at a nearby station.
