My Take

Neil Murray is one of those quietly essential figures in British hard rock — the kind of bassist who makes the songs feel heavier and more grounded without ever elbowing his way to the front of the stage. His run with Whitesnake through the early-to-mid 1980s gave the band a thick, muscular low end that defined their pre-pop-metal sound, and hearing him lock in with Cozy Powell on those records is genuinely satisfying. Then he turns up in Black Sabbath, the Brian May Band, Gary Moore's band — the man has range. Edinburgh-born, career spent propping up some of rock's most iconic names, and still largely unsung outside devoted rock circles. That's the session-musician fate: you play on classics and get half the credit. Neil deserves a lot more recognition than the average listener gives him.
