My Take
District 9 floored me, and it still does. Blomkamp's South African upbringing gives that alien-apartheid allegory a lived-in cruelty no Hollywood newcomer could fake. Coming up as an animator, he obsesses over texture, so his worlds feel physically heavy whether it is Elysium or Gran Turismo. The Bradbury Award is well earned. What I admire most is his inventor's instinct: he bends entire universes into shape on modest budgets. He is exactly the kind of restless science-fiction mind I want to see keep swinging for the fences.
