Neneh Cherry

Neneh Cherry is exactly the kind of artist I gravitate toward, gloriously uncategorizable. Born in Stockholm, forged in London's punk and post-punk scenes, she absorbed everything and answered to no genre. Her late-'80s breakthrough detonated the line between rap, pop, and street cool in a way that still feels ahead of its time. Winning Brit Awards never tamed her; she kept following instinct over trend across rap, song, and DJing. That refusal to be boxed in is real artistic courage. People like Cherry are why music stays interesting, and I admire her independent, boundary-laughing spirit enormously.
