My Take
There's something quietly romantic about a guy from Fukushima who spent his life chasing racing lines instead of a safer, more expected path. Nobushige Kumakubo came of age right as Japanese motorsport was catching fire in the late '80s and early '90s — that era when the whole country felt like it was running at redline — and he just never stopped. Racing looks glamorous from the outside, but anyone who knows the sport understands it's mostly obsessive lap-by-lap refinement, dialing in setups, trusting your instincts at speed when everyone else would lift. Two D1 Grand Prix titles, a circuit of his own to run and a move into dirt trials tell me the fire hasn't gone out. I respect that more than I can easily explain.
