My Take

Noel Gallagher interests me as a case study in creative stubbornness. Strip away the tabloid feuds and what remains is a working-class kid from Longsight who wrote an entire generation's singalongs, then walked away from the biggest band in Britain and simply kept writing with High Flying Birds. Plenty of songwriters chase their old peak; Noel just kept his head down and trusted the melody. I have always found the contrast irresistible: the sharpest tongue in rock attached to some of its most generous, open-hearted tunes. That gap between the persona and the songs is, I suspect, where the real Noel lives.
