My Take
Pau Gasol is my model of the thoughtful giant. At 213 cm with a University of Barcelona background, he played the game with intelligence rather than brute force, and pairing with Kobe to win titles in Los Angeles cemented his legend. An 18-year NBA career running from Rookie of the Year to perennial All-Star is remarkable enough, but the Citizenship Award and the Princess of Asturias Award point to a person whose character matched his talent. He also carried Spain on the international stage. I simply love watching basketball played with that much grace and mind, and Gasol embodied it.
