My Take
Paul Haggis is a writer's writer, and that's the highest compliment I can give. Being attached to back-to-back Best Picture winners, Million Dollar Baby and Crash, the latter of which he also directed to win both the Original Screenplay and Best Picture Oscars, is a feat almost no one matches. What draws me to him is the unflinching way he tackles prejudice and human frailty head-on; his stories are designed to discomfort. Add Emmy and Writers Guild honors and you have a genuine storyteller with a spine. I'm always pulled toward writers willing to use narrative to cut into the world.
