Perez Hilton

Perez Hilton divides people, and I get why, but I won't pretend he didn't matter. In the early, unruly days of the internet, he weaponized celebrity photos with his crude doodles and captions and basically wrote a new playbook for online fame. The interesting part to me is that an NYU-educated guy chose the gutter of gossip over respectable criticism and committed fully. Whatever you think of his ethics, the man understood attention years before the platforms did, then expanded into writing, broadcasting and beyond. I can't call him admirable, exactly, but his influence on celebrity culture is undeniable, and that's worth acknowledging honestly.
