My Take

Donald Sutherland's passing in 2024 closed one of cinema's longest and strangest careers, and I mean strange as praise. He never had a conventional leading man's face, so he built six decades out of intelligence, menace, and that unmistakable velvet voice. The Academy never once nominated him competitively, then handed him an honorary Oscar in 2017, which feels to me like the institution apologizing for its own blind spot. I love that he ended his run terrifying a whole new generation as President Snow. For me he defines the character actor's triumph: never the poster, always the reason the film lingers in your memory.
