My Take

To me Pete Shelley is one of punk's most underrated romantics. While most of his peers were channeling pure aggression, he wrote about heartbreak and confusion with melodies sweet enough to outlast the genre that birthed them. Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love" is a near-perfect pop song hiding inside a punk record, and that tension is exactly why his work still resonates. Coming out of Leigh near Manchester, he proved you could be raw and tuneful at once. His 2018 death was a real loss, but those aching chord changes are immortal. I admire him deeply.
