My Take
Ren Osugi was the kind of actor whose face you recall long before his name. Born in Komatsushima, Tokushima, in 1951, he spent his career in supporting parts and quietly changed the temperature of every scene he entered. Around 1999, the year he took the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actor, he seemed to be in every Japanese film released — menacing in one, pitiful in the next, working with almost the same face and somehow never repeating himself. His sudden death in 2018 at sixty-six stopped me cold. A national cinema loses real depth when it loses a man like that, and I still wish for one more performance.
