My Take

René Liu, the one they affectionately nicknamed Milk Tea, sits in a category I really admire: the Taiwanese artist who refuses to be just one thing. Born in Taipei in 1969, she's a singer-songwriter, an actress, and a director, and from what I gather she takes each of those seriously rather than treating any as a side hustle. Her music has that warm, intimate quality that ages well, and stepping behind the camera as a director tells me she wants control over her own storytelling.
