My Take
For me, Rex Harrison will always be Professor Higgins, and that is the highest compliment. He took a role that could have been insufferable and made it irresistible, half-speaking his songs in a way no trained singer ever could. What strikes me is his range: a Liverpool stage actor who conquered the West End, Broadway and Hollywood, collecting two Tonys, an Oscar and a knighthood along the way. He embodied a vanishing kind of British leading man, all wit, polish and barely concealed mischief. They simply do not make actors with that particular blend of elegance and edge anymore.
